Snack Attack 22nd June 2022

This was my first day out with the Fat boys since March.

We had planned to meet up last week but Steve was away in his Camper visiting that far distant country that is Northumberland.

So we changed the date to the 22nd so all four of us could be there.

Sadly we were down to three by this morning as one of the gang had a bereavement and couldn’t make it..

So our morning out was tinged with a slight melancholy as we thought about our friend and his loss.

It was Petes turn to chose a venue and in his wisdom he went for Snack Attack a small almost hidden venue on the roundabout at the end of Coniston Rd, right next to the Polish shop.

The TV programme was a bit boring.

Parking was a bit limited but if you go around the back there was plenty of ‘On Road’ parking and its only a short walk back to the Cafe, which is very small inside and painted in some pretty unusual colours for a Cafe. It looked more like a nail bar?

We found the only table that would seat four and examined the menu which was on a black board above the counter.

The large Breakfast (The Attack) at £7.50 obviously took our fancy, though Steve went for the medium, the (Full English )at £6.50. Both Included Toast and Tea or Coffee so they were good value for money.

We took our places back at the table and started to put the world to rights.

The Rail strike, Ukraine, Cost of Living, England Cricket Team. You know, all the usual stuff.

Before long the drinks arrived in nice big mugs. Steve has Black Tea and Pete has to have very strong Coffee so he took his back and they obliged by topping it up. The sugar was in little sachets by the door which meant getting up to collect it and then there was nowhere to put the paper once they had been ripped open.

There were two bottles of sauce on the table but they weren’t recognised brands so they tasted a bit vinegary. There were some sachets of sauce but I couldn’t be bothered opening them, they are too hard these days and usually, too messy.

The medium sized Breakfast.

The cutlery lived in a small wooden box on the table. It was mismatched and the forks seemed to be made for children? We were also one short but that was quickly replaced.

The Attack Breakfast (Largest).

When the food arrived it was on a good size plate, reasonably well laid out but the 2 slices of Toast were balanced on top of the food.

Two commercial sausages, slightly under done. Two slices of non descript black pudding. Two portions of Hash Browns, deep fried but nice and crisp if a little bland tasting. Some fresh (?) Mushrooms which were tasty, plus two slices of Bacon. Then it sort of went down hill.

The Beans were OK but the Tomatoes were tinned and the two Eggs were over cooked and looked a bit dirty around the edges. The yolk was the consistency of pudding rather than fresh and runny.

So, this was a large fry up, with the emphasis on fried.

Sadly it was let down by the quality of the ingredients and the inconsistency of the cooking.

The egg’s were over done and the sausages under done. Most of the ingredients were commercial quality. But at that price, including Toast and Tea, what could you expect?

Whilst we were there a regular stream of customers came in and the small kitchen kept them all fed but this is a really small operation and probably couldn’t cater for large groups.

It was clean and the staff were friendly and helpful.

This wont be one of our ‘Go To’ venues but we enjoyed the experience just the same.

THE BOYS LOOK LIKE THEY ENJOYED THEIR GRUB!

Summer starters. 16 th June 2022

Welcome Back!

I know its been a few months since I posted on this site, I hope you all followed me on my Travel Blog hendybill.wordpress.com whereI did review a few of the places we ate at in Spain, though there was only one place that really offered a Full Fat Boys and that was https://www.facebook.com/CasaflorMojacar Casaflor in Mojacar (Spain). It was good too.

The Large Breakfast at Casaflor

The advantage with this one was being sat on a balcony overlooking the sea. I made the mistake of ordering first one, then another fresh Orange juice which at €3.50 a pop, worked out almost as expensive as the breakfast. They do offer a smaller version which i chose on my second visit and this was just about the right size.

It was all cooked perfectly and if it had some local black pudding ( they make it in Turre the next village in land) it would have been perfect.

But now I’m back for the Summer and ready to start piling on the pounds in order to find the best breakfast (and other eateries) in Bristol. Though I may well expand the area (as well as my waistline) as we intend to do a bit of traveling in the Motorhome.

The Three Amigos with a spare seat!

The Fat Boys Breakfast club has continued to meet in my absence and they sent me photos of their last adventure.

Steve text. “The Fat Boys was a bit different but I think it was a success”.

It was at the Crafty Egg in Fishponds which is the sister venue of a very successful Cafe that grew up in Stokes Croft.

We have evolved from a Brunch cafe to a new greener space that also sells a selection of indoor plants.
With the aim of surviving a pandemic we diversified.  With fewer tables and more green we think you’ll be hard pushed to find a more serene brunch in Bristol.”

There is/was another plant shop which offered food in St Marks Road, Easton. It was called Aesops but trying to track it down this morning has proven to be a bit tricky and it may well now be extinct. These places come and go and unless they can catch peoples imagination, the economic climate soon destroys someone’s dream.

The Boys also visited the Acorn Garden Centre in Westerleigh Rd, Henfield but I have no evidence of the breakfast.

Whilst I was away I kept an eye on all things Fried and came across two interesting items.

Firstly a Face Book page on Frampton Cotterell Forum advertising a new cafe called Mrs B’s Coffee shop but it doesn’t say where it is so we need to find this one and try it out.

Then there was an advert for Cafe E J opening inside Selco Builders merchants, Taurus Rd, off Gypsy Patch lane so they are obviously targeting builders, which means big portions? And at £6.95 that has to be a good deal. This will be my choice when next its my turn.

So my first Full English came last week when I met up with my sister.

I dont have a car at the moment. I took my car off the road when we went traveling and I’ve not put it back on yet, so I’m sharing Jakis little Clio.

As a result, my Sister came across and we went local.

We walked to what was (when I went away) the Gingerbread Man but when we got there it was a building site.

It seems its changed hands and the new owners strangely were repainting everything, including the bottoms of the tables. Why do people spend money on this stuff. Do they really think a change in the colour of a table leg will attract more customers?

Only time will tell.

So we walked to what we still refer to as the Deli, but is actually called Daisy Chain ( a terribly twee, yummy mummy name that grates on me).

Still showing signs of the Deli.

This place has pulled itself up by its boot straps and is now a thriving little Cafe that is very popular and offers some great food.

I had the Full English which was really nicely cooked and well presented. Plenty of Bacon, two good sausages, two nicely cooked eggs with soft yellow centres, fresh tomatoes (could have done with a bit more charring) Black pudding, a pot of Beans and Hash Browns. Toast on a side plate (choice of white or Granary) is always better and it came with the spread on so none of that faffing around with wrapped butter.

My sister decided to have the Ploughman’s but then it got complicated (in a nice way) as you can choose the meat and cheeses you actually want. She settled for plain old Cheddar and Ham though she could have had two different meat’s plus two different cheeses

. A great selection.

Ploughman’s

This ‘Salad’ was a whopper and it was full of surprises. Scotch Egg, Olives, Slaw and potato salad as well as some crusty bread and pickle. An absolute feast. But be warned, It’s big, I mean very big.

I had a cup of Tea which was really good and strong whilst my sister had a herbal Tea.

Both were large cups.

Service was excellent, friendly and attentive. Environment was pleasant, a bit rustic, and there was a bit of noise from the very chatty customers who were deep in animated conversation at every table.

There is outdoor seating at the front for smokers(?) plus a covered area at the side.

My only criticism would be the toilet access, which is round the back and shows signs of its previous life as a domestic dwelling. ( When we first moved here this was the off licence and the guy that ran it lived above).

The toilets are hard to get to and I dont think they are accessible to people with mobility issues?

So a good start back, and plenty more to come?
